Partials

An important step in maintaining a healthy smile is to replace missing teeth. When teeth are missing, the remaining teeth can change position, drifting into the surrounding space. Teeth that are out of position can damage tissues in the mouth. In addition, it may be difficult to clean thoroughly between crooked teeth. As a result, you run the risk of tooth decay and periodontal (gum) disease, which can lead to the loss of additional teeth.

A removable partial denture fills in the space created by missing teeth and fills out your smile. It usually consist of replacement teeth attached to pink or gum-colored plastic bases, which are connected by metal framework. A denture helps you to properly chew food, a difficult task when you are missing teeth. In addition, a denture may improve speech and prevent a sagging face by providing support for lips and cheeks. Removable partial dentures attach to your natural teeth with metal clasps or devices called precision attachments.  Our doctors will design a partial that will fit your needs and be as esthetic as possible.  Some partials have no metal and are barely noticeable.

Q: Is it possible to get rid of the metal hooks around my teeth that show when I smile?

A: Of course! Dentistry is always changing which allows us to give you just about any result you desire. It sounds like you have a partial denture. Traditionally these appliances have metal clasps that wrap around some of your teeth to hold the partial in place. It’s possible to have a new partial made that does not have any metal that shows. There are long-lasting partials that have no metal at all and others that have some metal only in places that don’t show when you smile. Another great new alternative to a traditional partial is called a Snap On Smile. It has no metal or acrylic (the pink part) and just slips over your existing teeth. A Snap On Smile is very durable, does not cover the roof of your mouth, looks natural and is very economical. It’s also possible that you may be able to throw away your removable partial and have a permanent solution, like dental implants or bridges. I would recommend that you ask your dentist to list all of your options. It sounds like you will have at least five great options for eliminating the metal around your teeth. After you discuss the options then you can decide which option fits your budget and provides the result you desire.
